Student Research Breakfast Symposium

Since its inception in 2010, a key goal of the Catskill Environmental Research & Monitoring (CERM) Conference has been to support student researchers interested in working in the Catskills. The Student Research Breakfast Symposium was designed with that in mind.

The Student Research Symposium introduces beginning researchers to the Catskills and to research topics important to the region. Students will get the chance to interact with professionals working in the Catskills and learn about educational, funding, and fellowship opportunities currently available.

Student Scholarship Opportunity

Scholarships covering all conference fees are available to students who attend the Student Research Symposium on Friday, October 24, 2025. Students can request a scholarship by applying here: online form.

For any questions about Student Scholarships, please contact Tanesia White at twhite@dep.nyc.gov. Scholarships are unable to cover lodging, travel, or incidental costs.

How it Works

On Friday, October 24 at 9:00 AM, join us for breakfast and networking at the Student Research Symposium. This year’s symposium will feature a roundtable format, designed to foster dynamic engagement between students and environmental professionals (speakers).

  • Interactive Stations: Small student groups will join a station to directly engage with speakers.
  • Student-led Dialogue: You will have the opportunity to ask about real-world challenges, current research, and emerging opportunities.
  • Speakers: Meet professionals who began their careers as interns with the Student Conservation Association (SCA) and the SUNY Ulster Watershed Conservation Corp. These professionals may have walked a path similar to yours and are eager to share:
    • A broad overview of the rich history of research in the Catskills, and how student research work can build on that history;
    • What research topics are of highest priority for Catskills resource managers, as potential topics for student research projects;
    • What new funding is available for student environmental research; and
    • How previous student researchers managed their projects.
